On 1 July 1997, one of the last and most pres­ti­gious of Bri­tain’s colo­nial pos­ses­sions – Hong Kong – was re­turned to main­land China. The 99-year lease to the ter­ri­tory was con­tentious for much of 20th cen­tury. Bei­jing re­garded it as one of the “un­equal treaties” which awarded for­eign pow­ers hu­mil­i­at­ing con­ces­sions. Both Bri­tain and China agreed to safe­guard the unique char­ac­ter and au­ton­omy of the city, but its fu­ture is un­clear...
