To cre­ate the warm air to heat the build­ing, boil­ers were in­stalled. How­ever, due to the lack of elec­tric­ity, these were fired by slaves, who shov­elled char­coal, brush­wood and, in Bri­tain, coal to keep the fur­naces roar­ing.
