Tsar Paul I grants a 20-year char­ter to the North­east­ern Com­pany, re­nam­ing it the Rus­sian-amer­i­can Com­pany. It gives ex­clu­sive trad­ing rights in North Amer­ica and con­trol of the Rus­sian set­tle­ments there.
