THE STATE OF VIETNAM REFERENDUM

Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem called a national referendum to determine the future government of Vietnam. He defeated Bao Dai, the chief of state and former emperor, winning 98.2% of the vote amid claims of election rigging. On the 26th, three days after the referendum, Diem declared himself as the first president of the Republic of Vietnam.
