First Taranaki War 1860-1861

In 1859 the Te Ātiawa chief Te Teira Manuka makes a deal with the British Crown to sell land in north Taranaki. However, another and more senior chief Wiremu Kīngi refutes Teira’s claim to the land and soon war breaks out. British troops are brought in and at the end of the first year 230 people have been killed.
