Fall of the Berlin wall

When the Soviet Union announced citizens of East Berlin were free to cross into the West, during the following days over two million people celebrated at the wall, some attacking it with hammers. Symbolical­ly the fall of the wall came to epitomise the end of the Cold War, which concluded formally almost a year later with the reunificat­ion of Germany.
