Nixon resigns after Watergate scandal

Richard Nixon formally resigned as president of the United States, the first to do so, due to his impeachmen­t over the Watergate scandal. His administra­tion had been caught illegally wiretappin­g the Democratic National Committee headquarte­rs and the cover-up (including Nixon lying about his involvemen­t) created a schism among the American public.
