The Library of Pergamum

ESTABLISHE­D: 3RD CENTURY BCE

Situated in modern Turkey, the Library of Pergamum was a contempora­ry collection to Alexandria and often considered to be equally impressive. When the export of papyrus was banned from Egypt, parchment was adopted by the library to continue copying books, which proved more durable.
