Union fleet commander David Glasgow Farragut realises that he can’t wait for the mortar ships to force the surrender of the forts and decides he must run the gauntlet past them so he can continue on to New Orleans. Waiting for him, just upriver of the forts, is a disorganis­ed but dangerous collection of Confederat­e warships, including Manassas, Stonewall Jackson and the incomplete ironclad, Louisiana.
