THE SPANISH CONQUEST

1519 The fourth voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1502 sees European explorers come into contact with the Maya for the first time. It results in conflict (and the introduction of disease), with Spain starting its conquest of the Maya northern territories in 1526. Fierce resistance means the Maya kingdoms are not entirely conquered until 1697.
