CATHOLIC LEAGUE

-

CHARLES, DUKE OF MAYENNE

After his defeat at Ivry, the Duke of Mayenne sought refuge in Mantes and built up his forces to prevent Henry IV from taking Paris. While he succeeded, infighting and extremist views within the Catholic League seem to have pushed him towards seeking peace rather than further conflict, eventually finding an agreement in 1596 to end the Wars of Religion.

CHARLES, DUKE OF AUMALE

The Duke of Aumale had led a rebellion in Picardy in 1587 that had been the prelude to the House of Guise breaking away from Henry III of France. It was this rift that set the Catholic League against the king of France, which only became more ferocious when he was succeeded by Henry IV. Charles was captured at Ivry and died in exile.
