THE RUDSTON MONOLITH

All Saints’ Churchyard, Rudston, East Yorkshire

This Neolithic/early Bronze Age monolith – Britain’s tallest standing stone – may have been part of a ‘ritual landscape’ of barrows and henges. Legend claims the Devil hurled the monolith at the church or that it dropped from the clouds, flattening sinners desecratin­g the churchyard.
