THE FIRST GOTHIC BUILDING

Having decided to rebuild parts of an abbey church north of Paris, Abbot Suger defines Gothic architecture. The new eastern end of the Basilica of Saint-denis is tall and filled with light via large stained glass windows. There’s a pointed arch and a ribbed vault.
