ITALIAN GOTHIC STYLE

Gothic architecture spread to Italy in the 12th century and, for many decades, monks of the Cistercian Order banned decoration. Florence Cathedral initially has a plain exterior but there are wide pointed Gothic arches separating the nave and aisles as well as round clerestory windows, typical of Italian Gothic.
