FLYING BUTTRESSES

-

Notre-dame is well-known for its structurally symmetrical flying buttresses, a hallmark of Gothic architecture. Created outside the building as a form of support, these inclined beams absorb weight from the roof, preventing the walls from pushing outwards. They were only added once stress fractures were spotted on the upper walls but they allowed large windows to be created.
