Hell is a rubbish pit
You thought the damned had it bad enough already
GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus warns people of the dangers of going to hell if they sin. For example, he says: "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell."
The word ‘hell’ is a translation of the Greek word ‘gehenna’, which was an actual place in ancient Jerusalem that was used to burn refuse. With so much rubbish being produced by the local community, Gehenna was always burning. As such it was probably being used as an illustrative example of what damnation would feel like.
