GREY GRISAILLE

This picture by Pieter Bruegel the Elder portrays the ‘dormition’ – peaceful death – of the Virgin Mary. It’s a type of painting known as a grisaille, a monochrome picture made with various shades of grey that was used in large compositions to imitate the effects of sculpture.
