GENERAL JAMES VAN FLEET

General James Van Fleet was a 1915 graduate of the US Military Academy and classmate of President Dwight Eisenhower. A veteran of both world wars, he was a key military advisor during the Greek Civil War, and succeeded General Matthew Ridgway as commander of the US Eighth Army in Korea in April 1951. Van Fleet commanded Eighth Army during bitter fighting and limited tactical offensive efforts as negotiatio­ns to end the fighting in Korea dragged on for months.
