PRESIDENT MANDELA IS INAUGURATED

Nelson Mandela becomes the first Black president of South Africa after winning the country’s first post-apartheid elections. Mandela had previously been imprisoned for 27 years for his antiapartheid activism, and his election marked the beginning of multi-racial democracy in South Africa. He served as president for five years.
