MADONNA OF BRUGES

-

Created shortly after the renowned

Pieta, this Madonna was the only statue to leave Italy during Michelangelo’s lifetime when a rich cloth merchant from

Bruges, Belgium, purchased it. The statue was removed to protect it during both the French

Revolution and World

War II, first to Paris and secondly it was smuggled to Germany before being found hidden in a salt mine in Austria.
