If you enjoy the sight of Jupiter, the largest of all the planets in our Solar System, blazing like a blue-white jewel in the sky, then I’m afraid this isn’t going to be a good month for you. At the start of January Jupiter is too close to the Sun to be seen, but as the days pass it will slowly pull away from it. Even so, by the end of January Jupiter will still be so close to the Sun that it will be a challenge to find and observe; you might just glimpse it incredibly low in the southeast before dawn, but only if there are no trees, buildings or hills on the horizon in that direction.
