All About Space at 100
What’s your favourite memory of working on All About Space?
Team members past and present reflect on a milestone in the magazine's history
Launching the magazine
“When I was told we’d be launching a space magazine I was super excited, and I was thrilled to be asked to work on it! Getting it out of the door wasn’t easy though. It was a lot of late nights, and a lot of takeaways. But when we finally had issue 1 in our hands, it was rather magical.” Jonathan O’Callaghan, Features Editor (April 2012 – March 2014)
Meeting Brian May
“They say you should never meet your heroes, but on this occasion, Dr Brian May didn’t disappoint. I interviewed him a few weeks before I left All About Space for Asteroid Day, which Brian was a patron of. I tried to keep on the topic of asteroids, but he didn’t seem to mind when I slipped a question in about Queen. A total gent.”
Ben Biggs, Editor (June 2013 – August 2015)
Exploring space through art
“It has to be being given the opportunity to work with such an array of talented artists for our covers and art throughout the issues. Space is a world I’m not all too familiar with, so it really opens the door for me to experience new things and get to look into things I otherwise wouldn’t. I’ve had the chance to work with a selection of different artists whose areas of expertise lie in different parts of the art world, and each one you have to approach in a different way.”
Jonathan Wells, Art Editor (August 2017 – Present)
I was able to pass the torch
“Because of my time with the team and magazine, I was able to have in-depth conversations with my stepson about the planets, constellations and what you can see on the Moon from Earth, as well as reassuring him that the supernova of the Sun won’t happen for a long, long time. I have to add he could already recite all the planets when he was five!” James Sheppard, Photographer (January 2013 – June 2019)
Behind the scenes of Nat Geo’s MARS
“A few months after joining All About
Space, I was offered the opportunity to go to Budapest, Hungary, to be part of a press team to see the filming of National Geographic’s MARS, season two. This was an unbelievable and eye-opening experience, getting a rare peek behind the curtain, and I am still bragging about it today!
Lee Cavendish, Staff Writer (May 2017 – Present)
Exploring multiverse theory
“One of my favourite theories is the possibility that there could be universes beyond our own, and all of the paradoxes this throws up. Could there really be infinite universes? The very concept is mind-boggling. I look forward to the day we can somehow prove or disprove it.” Nikole Robinson, Production Editor & Freelance Writer (July 2017 – Present)
