Jovian beauty
This image has been given the nickname the ‘exotic marble’, and it is easy to see why, as this gaseous sphere of storms and vibrant colours on the face of Jupiter will capture the imagination of many. NASA’s Juno mission is still swinging past the planet from pole to pole, collecting important data and beautiful images during these close-up inspections.
Instrument JunoCam is tasked with capturing images of the Jovian king on its orbital loops. It is then up to citizen scientists to create masterpieces like these from them. The individual in this case was Prateek Sarpal, who emphasised the breathtaking, stormy cloud layers in this shot taken on 12 September 2019.
