Roter Kamm Crater

Location: Tsau Khaeb National Park, southwest Namibia

-

Diameter: 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles)

Depth: 130 metres (426 feet) Age: 4.8 million years

Amid the rusty-red dunes of the Namib Desert is a crater that looks like it’d be right at home on Mars. Roter Kamm crater is found in Tsau Khaeb National Park – also known as the Sperrgebiet – a mining area in southwest Namibia. Remarkably, scientists believe that the meteorite that formed this crater 4.8 million years ago was only the size of a large vehicle when it collided with Earth. The impact gave rise to a crater rim 40 to 90 metres (131 to 295 feet) above the surrounding plains, while the crater floor is blanketed in sand deposits at least 100 metres (330 feet) thick.
