1879
Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, to Hermann Einstein and Pauline Koch.
1884
He had private lessons and was given a compass by his father.
1891
Developed a thirst for scientific knowledge with help from medical student Max Talmud.
1892
Didn’t attend his Bar Mitzvah.
1894
His parents moved to Milan, Italy, for work, but he remained in Germany for a further year.
1895
He failed the entry exam for the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.
1896
Renounced German citizenship.
1900
Having attended ETH, he graduated with a diploma as a mathematics teacher.
1901
Einstein became a Swiss citizen, but struggled to find work.
1902
Einstein was employed at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern.
1905
Einstein published groundbreaking papers, including his theory of special relativity, equivalence of mass and energy, Brownian motion of particles and atomic theory.
1909
He became an associate professor at ETH, teaching theoretical physics.
1911
Predicted the bending of starlight at eclipses and became the youngest physicist to attend the world’s first Solvay Conference in Brussels.
