Translunar tortoises

The first spacecraft to swing around the Moon without entering orbit, then return to Earth, was the Soviet Union’s Zond 5 in September 1968. It was also the first lunar mission to carry passengers – albeit non-human ones. This ‘biological payload’ included two Russian tortoises. They both survived the journey, splashing down in the Indian Ocean six days after leaving Earth.
