Early in pre-production, Thorne laid down two ground rules. One, nothing would go against established physical laws, and two, that wild speculations would spring from the science and not the creative mind of the screenwriter. Director Christopher Nolan accepted these terms, though it didn’t prevent clashes between the two. Thorne apparently spent two weeks talking Nolan out of the concept of having the characters travel faster than the speed of light.
