Throughout the movie, a remark is made by several characters that if humans were the only life in the universe it would be “a terrible waste of space”. This remark is a reference to a statement by Scottish historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle when discussing the possibility of worlds beyond our own: “A sad spectacle. If they be inhabited, what a scope for misery and folly. If they be not inhabited, what a waste of space.”
