Stacking the rocket

Before it can launch, the parts are joined together

-

1 Solid Rocket Boosters

The boosters are added first. Each one has five segments stacked on top of each other.

2 Core stage

The rocket’s huge core stage is then placed between the two rocket boosters.

3 Launch vehicle stage adapter

The LVSA goes on top of the core stage to allow the rest of the bits to be added.

4 Interim cryogenic propulsion stage

This is bolted into the top of the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter.

5 Orion stage adapter

This piece is specific to the spacecraft being used and is used to mate it to the rocket.

6 Orion spacecraft

The preassembled Orion spacecraft, which carries the crew, is the last piece of the puzzle.
