WOULD WE NOTICE IF THE UNIVERSE STOPPED EXPANDING?

-

We would notice that the night sky would be a lot brighter, since the objects within it wouldn’t be moving away from us. It was in 1823 that astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers also wondered what would happen if the universe was infinite and static. He came to the conclusion that the night sky would be brighter since light from an infinite number of stars would reach Earth. Since we know that the cosmos is expanding, we know this isn’t the case. If the universe had begun in its present state, we wouldn’t be able to see the shifting of light from one end of the light spectrum to the other from distant galaxies, also known as redshift. Over time, it’s quite likely that gravity would pull everything in the universe towards each other in a ‘Big Crunch’.
