“The Jewel Box is an open star cluster 6,445 light years from Earth in Crux (the Southern Cross). It was called the Jewel Box by John Herschel, who described it as ‘a coffin of gemstones of various colours. An exceptionally bright and beautiful object when viewed through an instrument of aperture sufficient to show distinctly the very different colour of its constituent stars, which give it the effect of a superb piece of jewellery.’”
