JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE
1 Integrated Science Instrument Module
Cameras and science instruments are housed in a module behind the primary mirror.
5 Multilayer Sun shield
Five layers protect the observatory from light, radiation and heat.
2 Primary mirror
18 hexagonal segments made of gold-coated beryllium are used to capture faint infrared light.
6 Solar power array
The array always faces the Sun, allowing sunlight to be converted into electricity.
3 Secondary mirror
This mirror reflects light gathered from the primary mirror into the science instruments.
7 Massive mirror
Each of Webb’s segments measures 1.3 metres (4.2 feet) across – about the size of a coffee table.
4 Trim flap
This ensures that the spacecraft is stabilised.
