THREE POTENTIAL EXPLANATIONS
Astronomers have considered a few explanations for the origins of superbolts
Satellites have a good view
For a while scientists were unsure if the superbolts only flashed brightly because the observation tools on satellites were in a good position to be able to see them clearly.
They’re affected by cosmic rays
Scientists are studying the possible relationship between superbolts and cosmic rays from stars exploding far away in the galaxy. More were spotted during the last solar maximum.
Water has an effect on them
The vast majority of superbolts occur over water during the winter months. They form when the clouds are positively rather than negatively charged. Could salt explain the brightness?
