Bugged by flies

Amateur Gardening - - Ask John Negus -

Flies seemed to come out of my water butt when I lifted the lid and I now have little black creatures in the water. What are they? Brenda Beginagen, via email

I am wondering if mosquitoes have laid their eggs in your water butt and the flies you are seeing are adults emerging from the pupae.

A good way to purify the water and rid it of harmful bacteria, fungi, viruses and, hopefully, the creatures lurking in the water, is to add Agralan Citrox.

If your local garden centre doesn’t stock it, contact the company on
