Salad days!

When I grew up I thought sal­ads were the most bor­ing of meals: bit­ter let­tuce, in­sipid beet­root and chunks of dull to­mato with lumps of cold meat and blobs of Heinz Salad Cream (which I never ac­tu­ally liked).

To­day, how­ever, a tastefully con­structed salad fea­tur­ing home-grown green­ery, with tangy dress­ing and ex­otic ac­com­pa­ni­ments, is a joy to be­hold. And it is from now on­wards that our salad veg­gies are coming into their own, so let’s look at some of the sur­pris­ing facts sur­round­ing them.
