Container care

Amateur Gardening - - Gardening Week -

Autumn containers need different care to those planted in summer.

Don’t add moisture-retaining compounds to the compost as you are unlikely to need them.

Although autumn and winter can be dry, there isn’t enough heat to steal the moisture so watering by hand is less arduous.

Hard frost can be a problem as it causes water in the compost to freeze and expand, leading to cracked pots.

Combat the problem by lining pots with bubble wrap, keeping it clear of the drainage hole, and swaddling them in fleece on frosty nights.

Watch out for slugs and snails. Wrap copper tape around pots – it apparently gives these pests an electric shock when they cross it!
