VAL BOURNE’S GARDEN WILDLIFE
Don’t delay, says Bob – it’s time to get ready for winter! Topsy-turvy weather has played havoc with butterflies
1 Grab ashes from clean bonfires once cool – keep dry until needed, or spread around gooseberries and old cooking apple trees.
2 Search for any discounted Halloween goods, such as fake spiders and snakes, as they will make great bird scarers for next year.
3 Under cover, groom plants – remove every dead stem, twig, leaf and flower, as it’s on these that mould most often starts.
4 Cut the top off Brussels sprout plants, as this will make the sprouts swell more quickly and bigger by stopping more forming.
