Don’t de­lay, says Bob – it’s time to get ready for win­ter! Topsy-turvy weather has played havoc with but­ter­flies

1 Grab ashes from clean bon­fires once cool – keep dry un­til needed, or spread around goose­ber­ries and old cook­ing ap­ple trees.

2 Search for any dis­counted Hal­loween goods, such as fake spi­ders and snakes, as they will make great bird scar­ers for next year.

3 Un­der cover, groom plants – re­move ev­ery dead stem, twig, leaf and flower, as it’s on these that mould most of­ten starts.

4 Cut the top off Brus­sels sprout plants, as this will make the sprouts swell more quickly and big­ger by stop­ping more form­ing.
