AG readers chosen to name ‘new’ apple

-

IT is said that the best ideas arrive just as we are dropping off to sleep – and that was certainly true for Liz and Mike Bickers. They were one of the many entries into the AG ‘name that apple’ competition, run in conjunction with Forty Hall Farm in Enfield.

Volunteers at the farm’s community orchard discovered one of their trees had never been catalogued or registered, so asked AG readers to come up with a name for the fruit.

Between them, Liz and Mike wrote in with the suggestions ‘Forty Winks’ and ‘Juicemaster’ – and ‘Forty Winks’ won the day.

The winning name was announced at the farm’s Apple Fair last month and will be celebrated at their Wassailing in January.

A delighted Liz said: “I was sitting up in bed one night, reading in Amateur Gardening about the competition and the came just came to me. I thought ‘Forty Winks’ is a short sleep, which seemed perfect as I was about to go to sleep, so I wrote it down before I could forget.”

She added that her husband Mike came up with the name ‘Juicemaster’ as a joke and convinced her it was real!

Their prizes are copies of The Apple Orchard by Pete Brown (The Story of Our Most English Fruit) and Fruit by Mark Diacono introduced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Liz and Mike hope to see the tree for themselves if they attend the Forty Hall Wassailing in the New Year.
