Heeling in whips temporarily for winter

Amateur Gardening - - Your Gardening Week -

1 Dig a trench with a sloping side and lay the whips in so their roots are completely below soil level.

2 Fill the trench with soil and tread it down to keep the whips secure and make sure their roots remain covered.

3 Water well so the roots are saturated. If soil is extremely free-draining, you may need to water again during dry spells.

4 Whips can stay in place all winter, but the soil around the roots may need firming again if it cracks and lifts during hard frosts.
