Heeling in whips temporarily for winter
Dig a trench with a sloping side and lay the whips in so their roots are completely below soil level.
Fill the trench with soil and tread it down to keep the whips secure and make sure their roots remain covered.
Water well so the roots are saturated. If soil is extremely free-draining, you may need to water again during dry spells.
Whips can stay in place all winter, but the soil around the roots may need firming again if it cracks and lifts during hard frosts.
