How to plant a hanging basket in six easy steps

Amateur Gardening - - Your Gardening Week -

1 Fill your basket to the depth where you want your trailing plants to emerge, then cut holes in the lining.

2 Wrap the roots of trailing plants in plastic and carefully slide them through the holes. Remove the plastic.

3 Plant your central top plant (I chose a frosted sedge), teasing out any congested and circling roots first.

4 Add the peripheral plants, planting to the same depth as their rootball. Add bulbs as well.

5 Top up the basket with compost. Don’t worry about gaps –they will be filled as the plants grow.

6 Water the basket well, even if rain is forecast, to settle the soil around the roots and stabilise the plants.
