Cleaning your butt

Amateur Gardening - - Your Gardening Week -

Keeping your water butts clean is essential for healthy plants.

A dirty butt not only smells foul, but is also likely to contain pest eggs and larvae, as well as fungal spores washed down from guttering.

Keeping gutters clear is one way of reducing the risk of contamination, but so is washing out the butt regularly.

A solution of Jeyes Fluid will work and there are also lots of environmentally friendly washes on the market.

These work by restoring the natural balance of the water and keeping it free from algae and slime.

Popular products include Garden Genie Water Butt Cleaner and Hozelock Water Butt Treatment.
