TheRe’s a ma­ture spec­i­men of

V. car­lesii at the back of one of my borders that il­lus­trates the mul­ti­ple virtues of vibur­nums. In ad­di­tion to the colour­ful flow­ers and fo­liage – and the fra­grance – it has glossy fruits that feed black­birds and thrushes.

What’s more, al­though the growth is not es­pe­cially dense, the leaves are ar­ranged to hide the in­side of the bush ef­fec­tively so it has also proved a safe space for nests.

V. car­lesii’s berries will at­tract hun­gry birds
