For something a bit different…

-

Brachyglottis

Valued for its neat, rounded, silvered leaves, which contrast nicely with slender conifer needles – the young foliage towards the shoot tips provides the best colour. There are also yellow daisies in summer.

Griselinia

Exceptionally glossy foliage that comes in plain (and unusually shiny) green, as well as bright variegated versions like ‘Bantry Bay’ and ‘Variegata’ (above). Cutting for Christmas will help keep this vigorous shrub to a comfortable size.

Rosmarinus

Produces long, stiff-but-pliable stems when growing strongly. The slender green leaves are white below, adding bright flashes. Once indoors, the rosemary fragrance is noticeable. Variegated versions are available but are less effective.

Elaeagnus

Dark-green oval leaves last well when cut, growth is vigorous and cut shoots are quickly replaced. Comes in a good range of yellow-variegated varieties, including the brightly splashed ‘Limelight’ (above), plus the shining silver ‘Quicksilver’.

Pittosporum

Wiry stems carry small, rounded leaves. In some varieties (‘Garnettii’) these are edged in cream, while ‘Purpureum’ (above) turns purple in time for the holiday. Ideal for small table arrangements; grows back well after snipping.
