Give topiary a try
Evergreens really come into their own in winter. Clip box, yew, holly and other good topiary plants into simple shapes like boules, lollipops, squares and columns. Create a knot garden of woven miniature hedging, or experiment with fun shapes (try chess pieces or peacocks). You can buy your topiary bushes ready-trained, or do it yourself from scratch (consider using a topiary frame). Then trim with topiary shears in early and/or late summer.
