FURTHER to John Negus’s advice regarding the composting of pond weed (AG, 1 December), here’s a further suggestion. When cleaning out the filter unit, don’t simply discard the residue (sludge) – instead, either add it to your compost heap or dig it directly into your soil. It is a wonderful source of nitrogen.
