The key to quick compost…
Here’s an interesting technique! Lay a lattice of sticks on soil to create an aerated heap base. Stack 4-12in (1030cm) layers of spent herbaceous stems; farmers here use pea-tops and green foliage with a high surface area (like hairy croton or, in the UK, comfrey leaves). Add a 4in (10cm) layer of dung, more tops and greens, and a dusting of wood ash, sprinkling water as you go. Bacteria eats the nitrogen in the leaves and breaks down the stems. A parasol of banana leaves prevents over-heating – although a plastic rain cover is more appropriate in the UK.
