Nine herbal helpers

-

Lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora) AGM

This sun-loving deciduous shrub makes a delicious tea that smells of lemon sherbet and eases anxiety. Plant in well-drained soil in spring; cut back and mulch in autumn.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Used in a bath, the leaves are said to ease aching muscles, hangovers and low mood, and to boost circulation. Do not use in excess, or if you are pregnant. Plant now, in sun.

Marjoram (Origanum vulgare)

Prized for its antiseptic properties. A marjoram tisane is said to ease colds and stomach aches, and to help relieve stress. Plant in late spring, in sheltered sun; the flowers will attract butterflies.

Black peppermint (Mentha x piperita)

The black strain of peppermint has attractive burgundy-green foliage. Use it to aid concentration, clear up colds and improve digestion. Plant in spring, in sun or semi-shade.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)

One of the most expensive essential oils, but available for free in gardens! Said to be good for memory, motivation and stress relief, this rampant weed can be used in a tisane or in the bath.

Wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca)

A spreading plant, the leaves of which have long been used in immune system-boosting tisanes. New research indicates potential anti-cancer benefits, too. Also produces tiny, tasty fruit.

Nettle (Urtica dioica) In March, pick the tips of perennial stinging nettles from the messy patch of the garden or an obliging field. Nettles have been shown to ease symptoms of arthritis; use them to make tea or soup.

Lovage (Levisticum officinale)

A delicious perennial, it looks like flatleaf parsley and smells of celery. Use in cooking to improve digestion. However, do not use while pregnant or if you have a kidney disorder. Sow in spring.

Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium)

A popular ingredient in French cooking, this aniseed-flavoured herb is rich in vitamins and minerals that boost immunity and energy. Use in soups, on veg and in egg dishes. Sow in spring.
