Four autumn jobs to help keep lawns luscious

-

1 Edge borders and mow with blades set high, leaving some trimmings to rot down, feed the lawn and trap moisture.

2 Hoick out perennial weeds using a weed puller. If a hole or bare patch is left behind, sow with fresh lawn seed.

3 Aerate turf by sinking a garden fork 2-3in (5-7cm) into the lawn to let air and water down to the roots, strengthening the grass.

4 Resow bare patches. Fork over the soil, water, sow the seed, water again and use pinned netting to protect against hungry birds.
