How to create onion ropes

Want to dangle a homegrown, home-made onion rope in your kitchen? Here are some of my insider tips to help you achieve brilliant bulbs:

-

1 Grade your bulbs. Carefully rub off the loose outer layers (leaving stems in tact) and allocate into small, medium or large. Only make ropes from healthy bulbs. Tie a loop of strong twine from just above head height to waist height.

2 Use a premium large bulb to start off your rope. It’s essential that this doesn’t fall off, so tie it firmly to the base of your loop using some more strong twine. Then use some large bulbs to create the first few layers of the rope.

3 Taking a pair of large bulbs, thread the stem of one through the loop, leaving an inch (2-3cm) not through. Twist the stem around the loop to lock the bulb in place. Repeat to make a pair, then repeat again using progressively smaller bulbs.
