Planting pointers
L. candidum
■ Plant the bulbs shallowly; their tops should be level with the soil.
■ Set them about 8in (20cm) apart, in groups of three or more; groupings should be at least 3ft (90cm) apart.
■ Plant three bulbs to a container measuring 14in (35cm) across.
■ Place crocks in the base and fill with a mix of good multipurpose compost and plenty of grit. Just cover the bulbs.
L. martagon
■ Before planting, add a decent amount of light humus (such as leaf mould or well-sieved, well-rotted garden compost), plus some coarse grit to assist drainage – crucial if your soil is clay.
■ Unlike L. candidum, Turk’s caps should be planted deeply. Set them so the tops are 4-5in (10-12.5cm) below the surface of the soil.
■ Add a mulch of leaf mould, and be patient; these are slow to get going.
